Casa del Calvari, Endalt Arquitectes
I have an extended list of buildings that I like to reach back to from time to time. Somehow they lift my mood.
The Casa del Calvari in Spain, designed by Endalt Arquitectes is one of them.
It is a perfect example of embracing the past while respecting the existing structure. To summarise the design philosophy, using "wabi-sabi" might be the best. It is a Japanese word used in traditional aesthetics that means the acceptance of transience and imperfection.
If you have time, just read the architect's explication, which starts with two quotes from William Morris and John Ruskin. I can align with both, but John Ruskin’s words hit my heart:
“…the old buildings are not ours. The dead still have some right over them: what they worked for… we have no right to destroy it.”
